Tonga experienced a significant internet connectivity disruption on Wednesday, September 3, 2026. The event began at 08:05 UTC and lasted for approximately four and a half hours, with restoration observed by 12:30 UTC. The disruption was characterized by a notable degradation in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) control plane, which manages routing information across the global internet.

Technical Details

The event registered a severity score of 323, primarily driven by the BGP signal. The BGP.median signal, which measures the visibility of network prefixes in the global routing table, showed a measurable decline during the observation window. Concurrently, the ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across active IPv4 address blocks, recorded a 19% drop from its peak, indicating reduced data plane reachability. The gtr-norm signal, a normalized measure of traffic volume, showed a more pronounced 79% drop from its peak.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
