South Sudan experienced a brief but notable disruption to its Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing on Monday. The event lasted for approximately one hour, beginning at 03:30 UTC and concluding by 04:30 UTC on August 24.

Technical Details

The disruption was characterized by a degradation in the BGP control plane signal, which measures the visibility of the country’s internet routing prefixes to the global network. The event recorded a severity score of 107. During the disruption, the median BGP visibility for South Sudanese prefixes dropped by approximately 2% from its peak. Concurrent measurements of IPv4 network reachability, known as ping-slash24, showed a more pronounced dip of 13% from its peak, though this signal did not trigger a formal alert. The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
