The disruption to the BGP control plane began at 23:20 UTC on August 27 and lasted until 00:30 UTC on August 29, a duration of approximately 1.1 days. The event recorded a severity score of 1,842, with the BGP median signal remaining at a constant low level of 81 measurement points throughout the outage period, indicating a severe reduction in the global visibility of Tongan network prefixes.
Other network signals showed less severe impacts. The ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across IPv4 address blocks, recorded a 14% drop from its peak but remained active. The gtr-norm signal, a traffic volume indicator, showed a 43% drop from its peak during the observation window. The cause has not been publicly attributed.
Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation period.
