Ethiopia experienced a disruption to its internet control plane on August 10, 2026, affecting the visibility of network routes. The event lasted for approximately 3.7 hours, beginning at 16:50 UTC and concluding by 20:30 UTC.

Technical Details

The disruption was centered on the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) signal, which measures the control plane visibility of a country’s internet prefixes. The BGP signal recorded a severity score of 1,213 during the event, with a peak-to-trough drop of 6% in the number of visible prefixes.

Concurrent with the BGP event, other connectivity signals showed deviations. The ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across IPv4 /24 prefixes, recorded a 29% drop in reachable networks. The merit-nt signal, a proxy for aggregate connectivity, showed a more pronounced 54% decline from its peak. The cause has not been publicly attributed.

The disruption was resolved by the end of the observation window.
