Guatemala sustained a significant, multi-day disruption to its Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing from August 21 to August 26. The event, which lasted approximately 4.7 days, primarily impacted the control plane visibility of the country’s internet prefixes.

Technical Details

The disruption registered a severity score of 7,823, with the primary impact observed on the BGP signal. This signal measures the stability and visibility of internet routing announcements from networks within the country. The BGP median value remained at a constant, reduced level of 2,806 throughout the event period, indicating a sustained anomaly in routing information.

Other measurement signals showed varying degrees of impact. The gtr-norm signal, which tracks deviation from expected traffic volume, recorded a 27% drop from its peak. The merit-nt signal, a proxy for aggregate connectivity, showed a 29% decline. The ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across IPv4 address blocks, saw a minor 3% reduction in reachable networks.

The cause has not been publicly attributed. The disruption was observed as resolved by 00:30 UTC on August 26.
