Iran experienced a disruption to its internet control plane on Monday, September 1, 2026, affecting the visibility of network routes. The event began at 13:25 UTC and lasted for approximately three hours, concluding by 16:30 UTC.

Technical Details

The primary affected metric was the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) median signal, which recorded a severity score of 296. BGP is the protocol that manages how traffic is routed between different networks on the internet; disruptions to it can affect the stability and reachability of a country’s online presence. The event coincided with a 2% drop in the observed number of BGP routing announcements from Iran.

Concurrent with the BGP event, other connectivity indicators showed deviations. The Merit Network Telescope (merit-nt) backscatter signal, an aggregate proxy for internet activity, registered a 35% drop from its peak. The Google Traffic Report (gtr) signal, measuring traffic volume to Google services, saw a 30% decline from its peak during the observation window. The cause has not been publicly attributed.

The disruption was resolved by the end of the observation period.
