Niger experienced a brief disruption to its internet routing infrastructure on August 24, 2026. The event, which lasted approximately one hour, was characterized by a degradation in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) signal. The disruption began at 19:30 UTC and concluded by 20:30 UTC.

Technical Details

The disruption recorded a severity score of 91. The primary affected metric was the BGP median signal, which measures the control plane visibility and stability of internet routing prefixes. A drop in this signal can indicate a reduction in the number of network routes being advertised globally.

Concurrently, other measurement signals showed deviations. The ping-slash24 metric, which measures ICMP reachability across IPv4 network blocks, showed a 28% drop from its peak. The Merit Network Telescope (merit-nt) signal, a proxy for aggregate network connectivity based on backscatter traffic, recorded a more significant 76% drop from its peak during the observation period.

Reported Cause

The cause of the disruption has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored by the end of the observation window.
