Nigeria experienced a significant disruption to its internet routing control plane beginning on August 22, with effects persisting for over a day. The event, centered on Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) visibility, lasted approximately 1.6 days before concluding on August 24 at 00:30 UTC.

Technical Details

The disruption registered a severity score of 3,479 on the affected BGP signal. The BGP signal measures the stability and visibility of routing announcements for the country’s IP address prefixes on the global internet. The event period was recorded from 09:30 UTC on August 22 to 00:30 UTC on August 24.

Other network health indicators showed less pronounced effects. The ping-slash24 signal, which measures ICMP reachability across active IPv4 address blocks, showed a minimal 2% drop from its peak. The gtr-norm signal, a forecast deviation from expected traffic volume, recorded a more substantial 73% drop from its observed peak.

The cause has not been publicly attributed.

Connectivity was reported restored at the end of the observation period.
